Microfinance Volunteer - NILS
Job Title: Microfinance Volunteer – NILS
Employer: Brophy Family and Youth Services
Location: Warrnambool, Camperdown, Hamilton or Portland
Closing Date: Position closed once filled
Brophy Family and Youth Services is a quality accredited not for profit organisation, with a community-based Board of Directors. Our service provides a wide range of family, youth and children services across South West Victoria. We are a multi – site organisation, and employees may be required to work at any of our sites. These sites are based in Warrnambool, Portland, Hamilton and Colac.
The No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS®) provides interest-free loans for individuals or families on low income. It’s a community-based program that enables people to access fair, safe and equitable credit for the purchase of goods and services. When a borrower makes a repayment to a NILS program, funds are then available as a loan for someone else in the community. This is called “circular community credit” and is a real demonstration of the community in action.
NILS loans are small and completely free of interest and fees. They are designed to help people and families purchase essential household items.
As a Microfinance Volunteer, you will provide borrowers with all relevant information regarding the NILS program, advocate on behalf of the borrower and advise of appropriate community support where necessary. You may also provide borrowers with financial mentoring and assistance to help develop financial literacy and skills.
Microfinance Volunteers are expected to be both advocates for people with low incomes and facilitators of the NILS Loan Program in their community.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
- You will be supported by the NILs Team to learn how to complete phone, or face to face interviews with people wishing to access NILs loans.
- Using an online app, you will enter in a person’s budget information (grocery costs, other loans, fuel, medicines etc.) to help ascertain their eligibility for a NILs loan.
- An interview takes about an hour of your time to complete, and you can be flexible within regular work hours of 9am-5pm.
- You can volunteer to complete as many or as few interviews – dependent on what suits you.
- Full training and support from Brophy is provided.
To find out more about the position and to apply, please contact Brophy Family and Youth Services on 03 5561 8888 or forward your enquiry to Helen Polack (hpolack@brophy.org.au)
